Does puppet press merely peddle property developers PR?

In the wake of local residents expressing their concerns at the plans for Stewart Milne FC’s new stadium at Loriston Loch, the Press & Journal saw fit to spout out “Obstacles shouldn’t hinder stadium bid” which goes on among other things to call Trumpies gated community (with minor associated golf course ūüėČ ) a “major new infrastructure project” – sorry – that’s akin to calling the Press & Journal a newspaper that reflects local opinion ! Trumpies scheme is in no way, shape or form a “major new infrastructure project” although it will place major demands on the infrastructure of Aberdeenshire that will, no doubt, leave council taxpayers footing the bill.

The folks of Cove, Nigg etc. have every right to express their concerns at this new stadium / commercial development on greenspace on their doorstep.

One classic to come from the meeting last week was about parking spaces … of the 1,400 parking spaces at the proposed stadium … wait for it … 700 (yes SEVEN HUNDRED) will be for officials ! If AFC have 700 hangers on, no wonder they’ve won nothing for so long. 700 ! Among these 700 (yes SEVEN HUNDRED) must be some folk who support the Loriston site and are saying how so many fans will come by public transport … maybe they should pledge to use public transport themselves !

Perhaps this piece in the P&J would be better titled “Obstacles like local opinion shouldn’t hinder developements planned by companies who place a substantial amount of advertising in Aberdeen Journals Publications

Time and again in recent years we have seen the local press sycophantically squeal with glee in praise of speculative schemes that the public oppose (e.g. ACSEF /ACC / Wood plans to raze * Union Terrace Gardens).

How much advertising revenue does Aberdeen Journals receive from Stewart Milne Group & its¬†subsidiaries¬†? Does this influence the “papers” stance on¬†developments¬†by this group ?

How much advertising revenue does Aberdeen Journals receive from Trump International & its¬†subsidiaries¬†? Does this influence the “papers” stance on¬†developments¬†by this group ?

How much advertising revenue does Aberdeen Journals receive from the Wood Group & its¬†subsidiaries¬†? Does this influence the “papers” stance on¬†developments “backed” by this group ?

How much advertising revenue does Aberdeen Journals receive from Aberdeen City Council ? Does this influence the “papers” stance on any agenda the council have ?

How much advertising revenue does Aberdeen Journals receive from Aberdeenshire Council ?¬†Does this influence the “papers” stance on any agenda the council have ?

How much advertising revenue does Aberdeen Journals receive from ACSEF ?¬†Does this influence the “papers” stance on any agenda this unelected, unaccountable self-serving body have ?

I have asked these questions of Aberdeen Journals many times and received no answer, that is why I am moved to comment.

What is good in terms of securing advertising revenue, junkets and favour amongst a small clique of local businesses is not necessarily in the interest of the community.

PR material from companies / bodies that place adverts in a publication may make cheap and easy column inches for so called “editors” without the inconvenience of what would be revealed if real journalism was in play.

Think about who pays the piper at the paper and take what they print with a pinch of salt.

* raze … that’s right R-A-Z-E …

1. to demolish (a town, buildings, etc.) completely; level (esp in the phrase raze to the ground)
2.
to delete; erase

    1. The move to calling Trumpton an infrastructure project is deeply disturbing. CPOs are commonly used for public infrastructure. To have Friends of Trumpton starting to plug this line is a new development.

    2. Do ask under FoI, about advertising spend (non statutory adverts if you want to be fair) for the two Councils and ASCEF. AJL is not a public body and doesn’t have to reply … the others do.

Sadly of course there is a throw away line … Aberdeen City Council sold its soul to Wood for ¬£50m. Aberdeenshire gave its to Trump for free.
